Frozen fish packaging serves a different purpose than fresh fish packaging: the product is already preserved by freezing, so packaging focuses on quality maintenance during extended frozen storage rather than extending refrigerated life. ECHO Machinery's frozen fish packaging machines are configured for this freeze-storage application. The primary quality threat during frozen storage is freezer burn—the combined effect of ice sublimation (moisture loss from exposed product surfaces creating dry, leathery texture) and fat oxidation (rancidity development in fatty fish species). Vacuum packaging eliminates both mechanisms by removing the air that enables sublimation and oxidation. Vacuum-packed frozen fish maintains quality for 12-24 months at proper freezer temperatures (-18°C or below), compared to 3-6 months for fish in permeable packaging. The film used for frozen fish packaging must maintain its properties at freezer temperatures: standard films become brittle at -20°C to -40°C, potentially cracking during handling. ECHO machines use freezer-grade films that remain flexible at these temperatures, and the sealing parameters are adjusted for the different thermal properties of these films. Surface ice on frozen fish creates a sealing challenge—ice in the seal area melts during the heated sealing cycle, creating moisture that can interfere with film bonding. ECHO's moisture-adapted sealing uses extended dwell time and temperature compensation to evaporate surface ice at the seal area before the final bond forms. The machine operates reliably in the cold, sometimes sub-zero environment of freezing facilities.
