The defining characteristic of horizontal packaging is the product transport method: products travel on a conveyor belt through the machine, maintaining their orientation from infeed through wrapping to discharge. This is essential for products that must be displayed in a specific orientation—chocolate bars with the brand facing up, medical devices with instructions visible, or trayed products that must remain upright. The forming box shapes flat film into a tube around the product, and for gusseted formats, gusset-forming inserts create the side folds. The longitudinal seal is created by heated wheels or belts running continuously along the bottom or back of the package. Cross-seal jaws—either reciprocating for lower speeds or rotary for high speeds—seal the leading and trailing edges of each package. ECHO's electronic cam system replaces fixed mechanical timing with software-defined motion profiles that can be optimized for each product format. The cantilevered frame design places the film path and sealing area on the accessible front of the machine, reducing film threading time and simplifying daily cleaning.
